The current occupant of the White House responded to a letter that a 7-year-old school-shooting witness wrote to him. Donald Trump’s ridiculous answer prompted the child to write another letter. Children are growing up the U.S. fearful of mass shootings and Ava Rose Olsen lost her best friend, Jacob Hall, in a South Carolina school elementary shooting in 2016.
Trump responded to the letter by saying his goal is to make America safe.
“Schools are places where children learn and grow with their friends. Their halls should be free of fear,” Trump’s letter read, according to The Washington Post. “It is my goal as President to make sure that children in America grow up in safe environments, giving them the best opportunity to realize their full potential. I will continue to focus on protecting Americans and improving the safety of our Nation.”
At first, Ava, who is suffering from anxiety after the shooting, felt better, then she told her mother, “He didn’t say how he could keep kids safe,” so she wrote another letter to Trump.
“I sometimes still think about that day in my head thinking it will happen again,” she wrote. “If you have the time, I have some ideas to help keep kids and schools safe. Sometimes people who live through a school shooting have better ideas.
“I heard and saw it all happen and I was very scared. My best friend, Jacob, was shot and died. That made me very sad. I loved him and was going to marry him one day. I hate guns. One ruined my life and took my best friend,” Ava wrote back.
“I don’t want that to ever happen again. How are you going to keeps kids safe?” she added. “Please keep kids safe from guns.”
“Please,” she concluded, “keep kids safe from guns.”
It was just two weeks later that another school shooting took place. A teenager in Kentucky shot and killed two students and wounded a dozen others.
Our country is saturated with guns, leaving children like Ava too frightened to return to school. Ava is a bright kid and knows that Trump’s response failed to answer her question.
