Elected officials in Alabama are twisting themselves into pretzels trying to defend GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore after accusations of his sexual contact with teenagers. One of Moore’s alleged victims was only 14 years old when she said he took her to his home. While there, she said Moore removed her shirt and pants, then removed his clothes. Moore then allegedly touched her over her bra and underpants and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear. That victim, Leigh Corfman voted for Donald Trump in 2016.
An Alabama GOP state representative’s response to the explosive report exemplifies exactly why many sexual assaults and rapes go unreported.
On Friday, an Alabama lawmaker told The Cullman Times that he thinks legal action should be taken against the women who accused Roy Moore of sexual misconduct.
State Rep. Ed Henry said that he is “not buying” the Washington Post report, which was confirmed by 30 sources. In total, there were four women who Moore allegedly approached when they were teenagers.
“If they believe this man is predatory, they are guilty of allowing him to exist for 40 years,” Henry continued. “I think someone should prosecute and go after them. You can’t be a victim 40 years later, in my opinion.”
“The idea that accusations like this would stop his campaign is ludicrous,” Henry said. “You cannot tell me there hasn’t been an opportunity through the years to make these accusations with as many times as he’s run and been in the news.”
Henry went on to say that he believes Moore’s accusers have been stoked by the Democratic Party, then suggested that they might be eventually be paid money for their actions.
“I’m not buying it,” Henry said. “It’s too easy for someone to make these accusations. It’s foolish to go down that road, it’s like what if a frog had wings, he wouldn’t bump his ass every time he jumps.”
Henry, who identifies himself as a ‘pro-life’ conservative, is literally threatening a victim of sexual assault. It’s not difficult to imagine why children would not step forward after being touched inappropriately by a powerful man. Rep. Henry has two young daughters, by the way.
