On Monday, police in Panama City, Panama burst through the doors of the Trump International Hotel located there in the nation’s capital decked out in bulletproof vests and riot gear in order to evict Trump Organization employees illegally occupying the building on orders of Donald Trump’s sons Eric and Don Jr.
The raid comes on the heels of weeks of high-tension conflict between the Trump Organization — which although it is nominally run by the president’s sons, is still part of Donald’s holdings, as he has never divested himself — and the new majority owner of the luxury hotel, Orestes Fintiklis, who purchased 202 of the hotel’s 369 room units last year and quickly moved to evict the Trump Organization from the hotel.
Trump never actually owned the hotel, but his Organization had a contract to manage it through the year 2031. Panamanian officials determined that Fintiklis, a Greek anti-fascist businessman, had the legal right to force out any remaining employees of Trump’s, and even accompanied the police on the raid that evicted the stragglers, who have in recent weeks been filmed pushing and shoving Fintiklis’ own employees, and even throwing one of them down a narrow hallway.
The violence did not subside much during this confrontation on Monday, as Trump employees assaulted Fintiklis employees, security guards, officials, and even police in an attempt to stay on the property. Police and Fintiklis noted that Trump employees were seen leaving the property after the raid with some computer equipment in tow, apparently unwilling to let whatever was stored on the hard drives be revealed to authorities or the rightful owner.
Fintiklis completed Monday’s final takeover by first playing a Greek song whose lyrics translate to “fascism will not prevail” on the piano in the hotel’s lobby — and then overseeing the removal of Trump’s name from the side of the tower by a hotel employee.
All of this, notably, comes just days before the last scheduled day of employment for the US ambassador to Panama, John Feeley, who tendered his high-profile resignation in mid-January, citing an inability to stomach working for Donald Trump any longer.
This is the third hotel to pry Trump’s name from the side since he took office. We can’t help but wonder if anyone’s thought to mail him the mangled gold letters.
